Sport Studies
At Shimna students enjoy Physical Education up to GCSE. For those who have a keen interest in the area, Shimna offers an Advanced level course in sports Studies.
During this course students complete four core units which are essential for anyone considering a career in Sport or related industries.
- Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport
- The Physiology of Fitness
- Assessing Risk in Sport
- Fitness Testing for Sport and Exercise
Students will then complete a further three units in the following area;
- Current Issues in Sport
- Practical Team Sports/ Practical Individual Sports
- Exercise, Health and Lifestyle
- Sports Coaching
Students participate in practical sport every week, which is supported with theory content.
We are proud that many of our students have progressed from GCSE and undertaken Sports Studies in 6th form. Further to this many of our students have used their knowledge, skills and abilities and continued to study sport and related areas at university. For example, Michael Buchanan is currently studying Sport and English at Loughborough University. Our students have also bee awarded sports scholarships and places on the Elite Athlete programme at the University of Ulster.
