Business Studies
At Shimna you have two opportunities to study business, at GCSE and A level. At GCSE students follow the Business and Communication syllabus. The course is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of aspects of office organisation and use of computers in an office environment. This course is of practical use and of personal value. It enables students to become confident in the accurate use of the keyboard and to become familiar with a range of software packages commonly used in business.
The A Level qualification encourages candidates to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of realistic business contexts through a variety of approaches form the theoretical to those with clear practical emphasis. Practical assignments represent two thirds of the final marks. These include interesting projects including interview skills, investigating business and producing a business plan for your own small business.
General Aims
The Business Studies Department aims to provide students with a sound knowledge of business principles and the opportunity to develop the ability to think as entrepreneurs. Students will enhance their ability to use language, number and ICT to assist them in communicating business ideas.
Specific Aims
We also aim to:
- enable students to critically examine the aims, objectives and practices of business organisations from their economic, environmental and social perspectives
- develop an understanding of the methods and language used for decision making in business organisations
- provide opportunities to examine the implications of complex and changing situations in business
- enable students to understand and interpret information in verbal, numerical and graphical format, and present their findings through written communication and with the use of ICT
- encourage students to develop personal qualities such as initiative, self-confidence and independence
