We have in place many sources of support for our students.
Our Student Counsellor
Shimna's own counsellor, Clare McFadden, and our independent counsellor, Vicki Sherlock, can be easily contacted through the post box at the students' entrance. Students can ask for an appointment for themselves, or referrals can be made by a friend, a staff member or a family member.
Our Volunteer Social Worker
This year we are delighted to have the services of Jaime Creeth, our visiting art therapist, who works with students individually and in groups and who runs the art drop in at Greenhill.
Our Listening Ear Service
A number of staff members and 6th form students have Listening Ear training and are available to support any member of the Shimna community. Their service can be contacted through the postbox in the main entrance.
Assist and SafeTalk
Three members of staff are Assist trained, and are available to support any member of the Shimna community who finds themselves with suicidal thoughts. Staff are also SafeTalk trained, which is a first aid programme for mental health issues.
Yoga
Staff member Joanne Anderson offers yoga to staff and 6th form, and runs special anti-exam-stress sessions during the summer term.
The Education Welfare Service
Our Education Welfare Officer is available in college, who offers support to students and their parents/guardians with any difficulty which may cause problems in attending college.
The Careers Service
A careers officer is available regularly in college, who offers support to students in planning their future.
Social Services
We work closely with colleagues in social services.
The Kairos Centre
We advertise the services of the Kairos Centre and through other community based drop-in and helpline services.
